Manpreet Singh at Digital World posted an excellent article which lists 6 things you should consider when selecting Search Engine Optimization (SEO) experts/firms/companies.

6 points are worth noting:

Old is Gold – Experience matters!

Check their Page Rank

Avoid Black Hats

Search Company Feedback

Judge their Ability

Ask the King of Jungle

Detailed information on above points can be found in Manpreet’s post here.

Even though I personally believe SEO is something you can do on your own if you have just patience and some technical skills, SEO experts can prove good for non-tech-savvy bloggers/website owners.

Just in case, if you are using any popular CMS or blogging platform, then please try to go through its documentation or community forums. All popular CMSes and blogging platform supports SEO friendly website structure in core or via plugins. We also listed 4 plugins for better SEO of wordpress blogs, which can do wonders for your blog as part of our first wordpress plugin series.

Today I want to point out a useful tool for bloggers wanting to do a little research into topics to blog about (or even what topic to choose for your next overall new blog). The tool is a free one from Google – their AdWords Keyword Tool.

This tool is one that Google offer their advertisers (looking to work out what keywords to target on Google) but is also useful for bloggers wanting to research how many people are searching for certain keywords. It will also give you information about how many potential advertisers there might be on a topic also.

There are other tools that do similar things and many ways that you can use the AdWords Keyword Tool but let me show you a couple:

1. Using AdWords Keyword Tool to Chose a BLOG Topic

Lets just say I was starting a new blog and am having trouble choosing between topics or want to research specific keywords to use in my blog’s title and or domain.

I’ve narrowed down my interest to ipod accessories but am tossing up whether I should narrow my niche even further and just have a blog about ipod cases.

In the AdWord Keyword Tool I would simply enter in both terms and ask for keyword ideas. The tool will give me this (click to enlarge):

What we’re seeing above is a number of things. Firstly the Green bars under ‘advertiser competition’ show us that in the AdWords system there is a lot of advertisers competing for these keywords. This gives me an indication that if I were to use AdSense there would be a healthy amount of advertisements to serve to my blog.

In the ’search volume’ columns we get an indication approximate search numbers for the term per month in Google. While the numbers are unlikely to be perfect they do show that ‘ipod accessories’ gets searched for on Google more than ‘ipod cases’.

At this point in my topic selection process I’d probably also have a look at Google Trends for the two terms:

Here we see the same information (in terms of which term is more popular) but also see whether the topics are trending up or down and whether they have seasonal spikes (all good to know when choosing a topic for a blog).

2. Using AdWord Keyword Tool to Choose a POST Title

In a similar way I regularly use the AdWords Keyword Tool to help me form post titles that have potential to bring in search engine traffic.

Lets say that I’m writing a post on my photography site rating my favorite digital cameras. I’ve written my post and am going to call the post ‘Top Digital Cameras’.

Before I hit publish I decide to go to the AdWords Keyword Tool and type in ‘top digital cameras’ and ‘best digital cameras’.

What this shows me is that ‘top digital cameras’ only gets a third as many searches on Google as ‘best digital cameras’. Also, it shows me that ‘best digital camera’ (no plural) gets even more searches than both terms.

This gives me some clues as to what to title my post and what keywords to use throughout my article if I want to optimize it for a term with the most search traffic that I can possibly get.

If I were to look further down the results page for these terms I would also see other suggested search terms and how many searches there are in Google for them. This not only gives me ideas on what keywords to use in my current posts title – but also might give me ideas for future posts to blog about.

A variation on this is to use another helpful feature in the AdWords Keyword Tool – one that lets you submit text and get suggested keywords from it.

Here’s how to do it. Say you’ve already written a blog post and you’re wanting to choose a title for it. Simply choose the ‘Website content’ option and then the ‘enter your own text in the box below’ option. Then copy and paste the text from your post into the field provided and hit ‘Get keyword ideas’.

The tool will then scan the text suggest keywords that match it – highlighting those which have the most searches. You then can use these keywords as the basis for your post title.

Will this Really Have an Impact?

It is worth stating that using the AdWord Keyword Tool to help you choose keywords for your blog will have different impacts upon different blogs – depending upon how well they already rank on Google.

If your blog is new you might not notice much difference in the traffic to your blog no matter what keywords you use (simply because your blog is yet to build a ranking in Google yet) – however in time, as your blog accumulates links from other blogs and sites, it will certainly pay off. This is particularly true if you use the keywords not only in your blog post but the title (which has real power with Google particularly).

It is a known fact that social bookmarking websites are a great way to bring some traffic to your blog/website. They can also be a great place to discover new interesting articles. However, in the past few years, a lot of bookmarking sites have emerged, making it almost impossible to submit your articles or post to all of them. So out of all these sites, how do you decide which ones you should use to share your articles with others?

What are Social Bookmarking websites?
For those who know little about social bookmarking sites, they are a great place to share and discover articles. Whenever you write a new article, you can submit it to such sites and share it with others and at the same time discover some new articles by other members. All social bookmarking sites have some sort of voting system to rank the articles. If your article is interested and others like it then they will vote for it. The articles that get the most votes are displayed on the homepage and thus gain more exposure. Some of the most famous bookmarking websites are Digg, Stumble Upon, Reddit, Sphinn etc.

Submitting articles to social bookmarking sites can bring you a lot of traffic in short amount of time and can also be beneficial in the long run. However, not all the bookmarking sites are as beneficial as others. Thus, you have to be careful about which ones you choose to submit your articles since that can save you a lot of time. I have complied a short list of some important factors that you should consider before submitting your article to social bookmarking sites.

1. Niche
Not all bookmarking sites are general. A lot of bookmarking sites are dedicated to a special niche or a group of topics. For example, Sphinn is only dedicated to sharing news related to internet marketing. Thus, it is important that you don’t use it for celebrity gossips! You should use bookmarking sites that match your article’s niche to get the best results.

2. PageRank
With so many outgoing links, having a backlink from social bookmarking sites with high PageRank does not hold a great value but is still important in the long run. Thus, you should consider checking the PageRank of social bookmarking sites to see which ones have the highest.

Digg – PR 8

Delicious – PR 9

Furl – PR 7

Stumble Upon – PR 8

Sphinn – PR 7

Reddit – PR 7

3. Users
Submitting articles to social bookmarking site with very few members is quite useless since your article will not be getting much exposure. You need to make sure that the bookmarking sites you use have a lot of members. If there are a lot of users then that means there are more chances of you blog/site will getting some good amount of traffic.

4. Community
Sometimes you need to consider the community before you submit your articles. Are the members respectful? Do they like your post? Bookmarking sites are SOCIAL sites so you need to build some kind of relationship with other members and become part of the community. Thus, it is important that social bookmarking sites have a good supportive community.

5. Search Engine Results Page (SERPs)
Digg submissions often appear in Google result pages and thus provide extra traffic to webmasters. Thus, it is important that you choose bookmarking sites that have good SERPs. You want your submission page to have good ranking! Take a look at the fourth result on this google search page.

6. Traffic
The main reason for submitting to social bookmarking sites is probably to get traffic (permanent or temporary). Thus, you have to try some bookmarking sites yourself and see which sites work the best for you. You have to see which sites get you the most traffic. Some webmasters get tons of traffic from Stumble Upon while others struggle to get any.

I hope this list helped you decide which bookmarking sites you should use for your posts/articles. Remember, social bookmarking sites are great for getting traffic and building backlinks.

Now I am a little tired after writing this article so I am going to take some rest and watch some old episodes of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. See you guys later!!

This doesn’t looks good and not so Search engine friendly; if you are thinking of making it something like

http://microments.com/web-hosting

It’s pretty and comparatively more SEO friendly, You will need to remove the word “category” from the existing URL to make it look like this.

If you no more find that word important, open .htaccess file from the root directory of your blog installation and add the following line:

RewriteRule ^category/(.+)$ http://www.yourblog.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Done! Save he changes made and all your URLs will now look like this:

http://microments.com/web-hosting

Note : If your blog is older then Search engines might have crawled older URL which will now show 404 error after changes so, it is recommended for newly setup blogs.

If you know anything about search engines, then you know that Google is, by far, the King, Yahoo is the queen (with a little q), and Bing is like the retarded 2nd cousin or something.

When it comes to getting a site indexed, you can accomplish that very quickly in Google, Yahoo is slower, and Bing is oftentimes the slowest, from my experience. Bing will eventually find your site if you are doing any kind of regular SEO or link building.

If you are looking to get indexed in Bing, quickly, then I found a few ways that seems to work, and I thought I’d share it with members of this forum. I’ve gained much knowledge reading the threads here, so it’s my time to give a little.

Ways to Get Indexed in Bing as quick as possible

1. Exchange links with another site, indexed in Bing, that is PR4 or above. Bing spiders will regularly be visiting a PR4 site, so you should get one to your site by doing this. But, this exchange of links is not always the easiest to accomplish. You can check to see if a site is indexed in any of the 3 search engines by typing “url:www.mysite.com” (no quotation marks) into their search bar.

2. Submit your site to Bing at http://www.bing.com/docs/submit.aspx. I’ve heard that this page goes down from time to time, but it’s worth a shot. Submit, and if it is still not indexed in a week, submit it again, but wait at least a week. You don’t want to overdue and have that hurt your indexing.

3. This method appears to be the fastest. Go to MSN.com, click on “MyMSN” on the homepage. Sign up for a free account. You do not even have to sign up for a or have a hotmail address. You can use your already existing email address. Once you have your MSN account confirmed, go to http://my.msn.com. Locate the “favorites” section of the page, then click on “menu” of the “favorites” section. A drop menu will appear. Click “change details.” At that point you can enter any URL you wish and pick the anchor text you desire. Now you have a link in Bing. Should get some spider activity, quickly.

That’s it. Hope it helps

Creating a Google friendly site can be a daunting task. Google changes it’s algorithm frequently, and finding the facts behind the way that the search engine selects content is akin to the scenes on some ancient tapestry, where old women roll bones and sticks in the hopes of scribing information from out of the ether. But there are methods to finding the truth about the man behind the curtain, or in this case, the Google behind the HTML.

First and foremost, you must understand that reaching the top most ranks of Google is simply beyond the skills of many fledgling web masters, as the competition is fierce, and many of your competitors will be utilizing paid ads and back links to boost their page rank within Google. Competing head to head with these internet giants is likely not going to end in success for most web masters. But there are methods of garnering attention from Google, some of which can catapult your new site into the big leagues.

Starting with the web site itself, plan ahead and base the web site around a niche or topic that Google has a reasonably low amount of pages indexed for. The Google Ad Words tool can help you do this, as it displays how often a term was searched, as well as how often information from pages that Google previously indexed was found. Selecting words and phrases that are producing significant search volume, yet have minimal pre-existing content already indexed by Google, is the best strategy for choosing key words and phrases. Key phrases, in particular, are critical to the success of your site with Google.

Once you have chosen your key words and phrases, you will want to build your ”template,” basically the bare bones structure of the web site that will later be used as a fill in the blank type of web site tool. Even though Google reportedly does not read meta tags, there is good reason to use at least the description tag, since this is the definition that will display by default in the excerpt area beneath the name of your site in the results page on Google.

Using a keyword meta tag is also recommended, since it never hurts to get attention from other search engines as well. Remember that on the web and especially with Google, content is always king. The more content you have on your site, the better chance your site will have of attracting attention, as this is exactly what everyone is looking for.

Building the key word rich content, in the proper amount and frequency, is all important information and makes for good practice and will, at the very least, give Google a reason to return your web site in it’s search results. But keywords alone will never get your site to the top of Google because of the method of back link tracking that Google employs. If your site doesn’t have sufficient back links from sites with relevant content and a decent Google page rank value, it is unlikely that your page rank with Google is going to increase by any significant measure.

Some of the methods of increasing your back links are activities like leaving your link on forums and message boards. Comments pages and guest books are some obvious choices for leaving your link, as well as free classified ads, MySpace and Facebook type social networking sites, even paying for back links from pages with better Google page rank than you. The list of ways to increase your back links is nearly endless. If you spend a day out of every week just trolling around the web leaving your back link at relevant sites, you will eventually build your Google page rank to extreme values.

The key to the success of your efforts with Google is continued education and activity. Constantly update your site, to stimulate search engine spiders to visit your site. Continue adding content to your site, while focusing on your relevant keywords, and never stop building your back links. Follow these three basic steps and you will, eventually, rise to the top of the Google search results.
